Tan Sri Dato' Azman Hashim dilahirkan pada Julai 1939 di Kuala Lumpur bagi sebuah keluarga tiga belas adik-beradik dan membelanjakan zaman kanak-kanak dia di Baru Kampung, Kuala Lumpur. Bapa dia ialah satu pendisiplin tegas dan ibu dia ialah seorang guru sekolah yang kemudian menjadi guru besar School Baru Girls Kampung. Dalam 1954, dia menduduki Senior Cambridge Examination dan mendapat satu peringkat pertama. Dia telah ditawarkan perakaunan di satu Colombo Plan Scholarship yang mengambil dia ke Australia dari 1955 hingga 1960. Dia menjadi Chartered Accountant and Chartered Secretary sebelum umur 21. Dia menjadi Fellow kedua-dua Chartered Institute of Accountants, Australia dan Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators dalam 1960. Kemudian dia juga menjadi Fellow Institute of Bankers, Malaysia, Institute of Directors, Malaysia dan Institut Pengurusan Malaysia.

Tan Sri Dato' Azman Hashim ialah satu tokoh korporat. Pengalaman dia bermula di Perth, Australia dimana dia telah bekerja oleh Tetuan O.L. Haines & Co dari 1955-1960. Dalam 1960, dia kembali untuk berkhidmat dengan Bank Negara Malaysia hingga Mei 1964 apabila dia meninggalkan untuk mula amalan perakaunan sendiri Azman & Co yang kemudian menjadi suatu perkongsian, Azman Wong Salleh & Co.. Dia kemudiannya menyertai Board of Malayan Banking Berhad dalam 1966 dan ialah Pengarah Eksekutifnya dari 1971 hingga 1980. Dia telah dilantik Pengerusi Eksekutif Berhad, Kwong Yik Bank dalam 1980 sehingga 1982 apabila dia menjadi Pengerusi AmBank Group sehingga hari ini. Sekarang, Tan Sri Dato' Azman Hashim ialah Pengerusi Eksekutif Amcorp Group Berhad dan Pengerusi beberapa subsidiari AmBank Group dan juga Amcorp Properties Berhad.
